Behavior-change products are compound AI systems because motivation depends on the interaction of models, memory, retrieval, tools, policy, interfaces, experiments, and human feedback—not one model response.
Loss aversion can make goals feel consequential, but AI coaching should use it carefully because personalized threats can turn support into control, anxiety, and avoidance.
AI can improve accountability matching by pairing people around compatible goals, schedules, and support styles, but users need consent, privacy, easy rematching, and non-punitive recovery.
Adaptive nudges should respond to a user’s changing context and receptivity, choosing among reminders, reframing, easier actions, and deliberate silence.
A good AI coach has an exit condition: as competence and self-regulation grow, it should fade prompts, transfer responsibility, and make independent action easier.
Motivational prompt design treats AI wording as part of a behavior-change system, helping users form intentions, reduce friction, build competence, and act for reasons they still own.
AI can turn vague intentions into concrete if-then plans, linking a future situation to a specific action so motivation survives the gap between deciding and doing.
