As workplace AI moves from suggestions to autonomous execution, motivation depends on whether employees gain higher-level agency or lose meaningful control over how work is done.
The agentic workplace will be motivationally sustainable only if new roles preserve human autonomy, mastery, and meaning while agents take on execution and organizations redesign learning, responsibility, and recognition.
AI copilots can raise productivity and accelerate learning, but assistance becomes motivationally costly when workers stop seeing a meaningful link between their own judgment, effort, and results.
