Task completion and user growth are related but distinct. Motivational AI needs an optimization hierarchy that rewards immediate success without making users permanently dependent on assistance.
Loss aversion can make goals feel consequential, but AI coaching should use it carefully because personalized threats can turn support into control, anxiety, and avoidance.
Identity-based AI coaching can connect actions to a user’s chosen sense of self, but it should keep identity provisional, editable, and subordinate to autonomy.
Personalized rewards can increase relevance, but they can also become controlling, inequitable, or so optimized that intrinsic motivation weakens.
