Anton Osika, GPT Engineer, and the Road to Lovable

Anton Osika's GPT Engineer explored a simple 2023 proposition—describe software in natural language and let an AI produce a project—then evolved into Lovable, a product aimed at letting non-programmers build deployable applications through conversation.

GPT Engineer started as an experiment in specifying software with prose

In mid-2023, Anton Osika released the open-source GPT Engineer project as an experiment in code generation. Lovable’s own origin page describes the project as exploring how AI could help build software before code generation had become a mainstream product category.[1]

The repository’s core interaction was direct: specify software in natural language, let the system write and execute code, then ask for improvements.[2]

The project made whole-project generation the object of experimentation

Earlier coding assistants commonly emphasized completion within a file. GPT Engineer asked a broader question: could an LLM turn a higher-level specification into a multi-file software project?

That scope made architectural decisions, clarification and iteration more visible parts of the model’s job.

Natural language became the project specification

The user could begin with a description of desired behavior rather than an existing codebase. This resembles the later vibe-coding pattern of directing a product rather than manually implementing every function.

Execution introduced a feedback path

The project’s workflow included generating and executing code, allowing the system and user to react to concrete runtime behavior rather than treating generated source as the final artifact.

The open-source project revealed demand beyond expert developers

Lovable’s history says GPT Engineer grew rapidly on GitHub, but the command-line form still assumed a technically comfortable user.[1]

Osika and collaborators therefore began building a Web-based product intended to make the same core idea accessible to people who did not want to manage a developer terminal.

Lovable translated a developer experiment into a software-creation product

The company says that a commercial web version of GPT Engineer was built for non-technical users and that Lovable was founded in late 2023 around the larger mission of software that creates software.[1]

That transition is historically important: natural-language code generation became product creation, including interface, deployment and ongoing iteration.

Conversation replaced a specialized authoring interface

Lovable’s product model asks users to describe what they want and then refine the result conversationally, reducing the requirement to understand the implementation before seeing a usable prototype.

The target audience expanded beyond professional programmers

Lovable’s 2025 funding announcement explicitly framed the product for founders, designers, sales teams and other users who might otherwise depend on an engineering team.[3]

The company turned democratization into its public mission

Lovable later stated that its mission was to empower the large majority of people who cannot code to build and launch production-grade software by talking to AI.[4]

That is a stronger claim than making programmers faster. It positions natural-language software creation as a new access layer to computing.

Agent Mode moved the product beyond one-shot generation

In June 2025, Lovable announced Agent Mode, describing a system that could interpret a request, explore a codebase, uncover missing context, edit files, inspect logs and auto-fix issues.[5]

This changed the underlying interaction from ‘generate my app’ toward an iterative software agent capable of taking multiple tool-mediated steps.

GPT Engineer and Lovable sit directly inside the vibe-coding lineage

The defining experience is intent-first creation: describe a product, inspect a working result and ask the AI to change it. That is close to what “vibe coding” later came to mean in popular product usage, even though GPT Engineer predates Karpathy’s 2025 term.

Osika should therefore be treated as a precursor practitioner and product builder, not as the person who coined the phrase.

Why Anton Osika belongs among the pioneers

Osika’s significance comes from continuity between an open developer experiment and a mass-market conversational builder. GPT Engineer made natural-language project generation concrete in 2023; Lovable then made the same interaction accessible to a much broader audience.

The historical line from terminal experiment to conversational application platform illustrates how quickly AI coding moved from source assistance toward software creation as a user-facing medium.
